In 2009, the International Rescue Committee launched New Roots Farm, and in 2019 the City Heights Community Development Corporation took over its management. I see New Roots as one of the most important gems in our neighborhood, a sanctuary where people come together to grow food, build community, and create opportunity.
With 71 farmers cultivating 89 plots on 2.3 acres, the farm has become both a source of nourishment and healing. Many of our gardeners were farmers in their home countries, and here they are able to reconnect with the land, strengthen their families’ food security, and support their overall well-being.
What I love most is how New Roots has grown into more than just a garden—it’s a hub of empowerment. Farmers sell their produce at the City Heights Farmers’ Market, the first in the county to accept EBT.
