Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

About Graffiti Shack:

I originally put up this page with very little information on what Graffiti Shack was besides it being rumored to have once been a bait & tackle shop. After speaking to my uncle and grandpa (both whom have lived here for over 60 years) and other old timers, I was finally able to get an answer!

The structure once housed an electric box for a light at the end of the jetty that served to warn boats of the jetty’s location. It also helped guide them in as this area can get quite foggy at night. Before this structure was put in, there were at least a handful of accidents and capsized boats.

One of my followers had to say this about the graffiti shack when he was young:

“I spent a lot of years fishing that area where the bay channel flowed into the San Diego River Channel. As a kid, ages 13-21, I snorkel dived the River Flood Channel for halibut, bass, croaker and dodge stingrays.

The ocean side always seemed devoid of fish, though sometimes we caught baby barracuda or mackerel. The jetty rocks were always bad news because a caught fish would just go into the rocks and we would lose our gear.”

While you’re in the area, make sure to visit the Grass Skirt Speakeasy nearby!

The structure was eventually replaced by the solar light that is there now. Today all that remains is a skeletal foundation, filled with graffiti scrawlings. We used to fish off this jetty when I was a child but sadly I do not remember seeing this structure.

We brought my dog the day we visited, which I regret as this is not an easy hike and I would not say it’s dog-friendly.

Although short in distance, the scrambling and avoiding falling into the pits of the ocean will definitely take some time.  Either go barefoot or bring shoes with good traction. As you can see, it’s not hard to get injured.  Be very careful with each step you take!Bring your dancer and gymnast friends to get the cool shots! 😛graffiti shackbecome a member
