About the Bernardo Winery
The Bernardo Winery is the oldest winery in Southern California and is still fully functional as a producing winery. It is also strewn with unique village shops including a coffee shop, salon, an award-winning café and the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society.
Founded in 1889 on what was a Mexican land grant, 5 partners opened the Winery. With the start of the prohibition era, the wine business diminished. Vincent Rizzo, first generation Rizzo owner, had the forethought to buy the winery during prohibition from the dwindling partnership and continued production of wine and grape juice guaranteed to ferment by the end of the road.
Personal Experience
The Bernardo Winery is truly is such a lovely place to visit. I love how you can order a glass of wine and just wander around the grounds. There are a lot of historic relics scattered throughout the property that look to have been inherited with the land purchase over 120 years ago. The food and wine are great here, and there are other small shops to explore while here. Definitely a fun afternoon or evening trip!
