Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

About La Mesa’s Secret Stairs

For those of you that enjoy safe, public outlets to get your exercise, love scenic views but don’t want to pay for a gym membership, the La Mesa Secret Stairs may be for you!

The Secret Stairs were built as a means to make navigating throughout this La Mesa hillside easier for foot traffic.  Part of the stairs were actually constructed over 100 years ago!

The stairs cut through the streets of Mt. Nebo, with an elevation of 820 ft.  The 245 stairs are broken into sets, which will give you some nice, flat breaks as you make the climb.  All along the way you will be met with beautiful views though.

Please keep in mind that this is a suburban neighborhood so be respectful of all neighbors.  This is a great workout, which you will most likely pass multiple people walking along your trek.

From the intersection of Windsor Drive and Canterbury Drive, you climb a total of 245 steps, interrupted by two cross streets, to reach the top of Summit Drive. On reaching the 245th step, at Summit Drive, you’re on one of La Mesa’s highest knolls, elevation 830 feet.

Visit Briercrest Park nearby!

Continue by following Summit Drive about 100 yards to a second stairway descending east. Follow its 184 steps to Beverly Drive.

A third, shorter stairway can be found on Fairview Avenue near Alta Lane. Ascend 44 steps, cross Pasadena Avenue, and continue via the remaining 16 steps and a paved pathway to Vista Drive. It’s only 60 steps total, but with the steep pathway, it’s a good workout nonetheless!

Circle back the easy way to your starting point via streets such as Fairview Avenue, Beverly Drive, Vista Drive, or Pasadena Avenue.
