Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!
Happy Hens Farm is an organic egg farm in Ramona that specializes in raising beyond pasture-raised, truly outdoors chickens with a corn & soy-free diet. They have a petting zoo, farm trail and playground available to the public Monday-Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. Come feed and hang out with the animals, goats, pigs, horses, cows, chickens, and more!
You can also find their eggs in a store near you all over Southern California by using their egg locator on their website. They also offer farm tours, a beautiful Airbnb Dairy Suite stay and a HipCamp.
The business is run by husband and wife duo Luie and Chloe. Luie grew up with a family background in conventional farming and Chloe had a huge passion to learn the trade many years ago and never looked back..
Over a decade ago a vendor asked Luie if he would consider raising pasture-raised hens with small mobile barns. This sparked a journey to understand what pasture-raised eggs were.
This led to the creation of Happy-Hens in early 2012, with Luie’s goal to produce the most nutritious and delicious eggs while minimizing environmental impact by moving barns for rotational grazing and using recycled materials.Â
The farm raises organic hens outdoors in open fields and is highly rated for its humane practices by both Cornucopia Institute and Whole Foods Market.
The farm’s 10-acre property was once home to a fully operational dairy called Rancho Costa Plenty, where over 400 cows once roamed. Now, the farm is home to more than 10,000 chickens, though a few milk cows can still be spotted alongside the hens.
Their farm store is packed with nutritious food options which include raw milk (very hard to find in San Diego), the most delicious egg nog I’ve ever had, kombucha on tap, pasture-raised meat and a bunch of other wonderful items which are almost all made by Ramona locals!
They even have a drive-thru for their eggs which will double as a coffee shop drive-thru very soon!
Monthly group or private tours available to learn about sustainable farming practices, decode egg labels, and egg anatomy. You can sign up on their website.
Additional amenities include access to a picnic area, playground, petting zoo, and farm store, with group tours available on a set schedule and private tours for schools or large groups by request.
Happy Hens Farm offers both a luxury stay in their “Dairy Sweet” or primitive lodging options at their camp site.
The beautiful farm suite includes a full kitchen, king-size bed, a soaking tub and a balcony with breathtaking views of the farm. The Dairy Sweet pays tribute to the farm’s dairy roots while providing a charming retreat for visitors.Â
For those who enjoy the outdoors, the campground is ideal for both tent campers and RVs, offering a peaceful connection to nature and easy access to the fully-stocked farm store.
They also have animal feed for sale!Â
