Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

Book an Airbnb stay at the Hobbit House

About the Hobbit House

It turns out we don’t need to travel to New Zealand to get the full ‘Lord of the Rings’ experience.  Tucked away deep in the hills of North County lays San Diego’s very own hobbit house! Built in 2013, this whimsical abode was dreamed up by wildlife photographer Roy Toft. With the help of Mark Niki, a wood artist, and Scotty Ensign, a master landscape architect, they were able to make the dream come to life!

Roy says that initially he just wanted to make a “cool little place to sip whiskey in front of a fire and a small place for guests to stay”.  Since then it has been opened up as an Airbnb, which means you can have the opportunity to stay here if you so wish!

Think of this as an upscale glamping experience as there is no electricity in the home and the shower and bathroom are outdoors.  I personally love it, as it at least somewhat helps us get back in touch with our primitive roots.

You DO, however, get to sleep in a queen sized Murphy bed and wash up at a large granite sink.  There is a small closet, desk, bar, dart board and adorable fireplace.  For food, there is a cooler, camping stove and BBQ provided.

While you’re in the area, make sure to visit Rashelica Winery nearby!

The yard is filled with a colorful array of plants and artwork, including a beautiful garden and pathway on the roof which you are welcome to relax on.  The scenery is stunning and there are trails all throughout the valley.

We also did a music session here with local artist Jesus Gonzalez.  Check it out!

In true hobbit fashion, there is a magical garden on top of the roof that you can relax at and explore:
