Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!
This is probably the “spookiest” tunnel I’ve explored so far with ghosts being the main theme around the artwork inside. It kind of feels like you’re going through a true “underground” art gallery with a sinister twist. My advice is watch the new IT movie and then head in here. 😉
The tunnel goes many miles with multiple chambers you can take. We did not go all the way but did go several miles deep. Try to bring water boots if you venture out here as there is at least some water inside year-round. Storm drains are never safe to explore within 48 hours after or during a rainfall.
We decided to do the adventure at night, which adds an extra spooky touch:
Here is what you’re first greeted with. If you’ve seen the new or old movies IT then this may either really excite you or freak you out. Pennywise is at the entrance of the tunnel:
There’s little ghosts to follow you along the way:

I’m not sure where they entered but I think I went to the same tunnel from a different entrance
If you you to kit karson park and take the sidewalk that goes towards target there’s a little path that goes down to a ditch/ drain and it’s in there. Bring boots or shoes that can get wet

Been in there plenty of times I wouldn’t say it’s haunted but I’ve found snakes in there and had one run in with an angry hobo. It definitely feels creepy in there

Is the tunnel newish? I don’t remember any tunnels by Sandburg. I used to live across the street from what is now the park when it was just a big dirt hill in the late ’70’s early 80’s.

This Tunnel has been there likely since Mira Mesa was first developed. I have gone completely through it in the very early eighties and there was graffiti from 1974. Written near the west entrance opening which would be close to the Sandburg park which was a dirt hill probably till the late eighties. In fact when I went to school for Kindergarten the Sandburg school was held in 3 or 4 homes immediately across the hill. This was before the bungalows were placed
adjacent to the Permanent shoo; i lived a block west of Camino Ruiz and south of Santa Arminta . Moved away from Mira Mesa in 1982.
