Electric Eye Photography has got to be one of the coolest photo studios & concepts in San Diego. Dubbed “The Worlds One & Only Metal-Retro Photo Van”, you will definitely feel as though you’ve stepped back in time doing one of these shoots.
Electric Eye specializes in retro portraits in the style of glamour shots, soft focus, ’80s and ’90s mall photography, green screen multiple-composite images with floating heads in space and more!
If you are looking for unique photos that all the glory of the 80’s could provide, this is the studio for you. I see these making great band album covers, holiday cards or like we did and a blowing your photos up onto giant canvases for your home!
Electric Eye is primarily a mobile photo van in a decked out muraled 1994 Chevy G20. The owner, Bridget, is a professional full-time photographer with a BFA in Photography. Occasionally she rents out a green screen studio, which is what was used for our shoot.
Whether you were alive in the 80’s or just enjoy a good 80’s flashback, there is no denying that it was a wild era. Large hair, bright neon wardrobes and what can now be looked back on as retro futurism. It was a delightfully-tacky time!
Bridget began her photography journey in 2006, graduating with a BFA in Photography from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in 2014. She also has her FAA Part 107 drone license and 16 years of photo editing experience.
She has a wide range of photographic experience ranging from pets to portraits and everything in between.
At the time of the COVID shutdown she had been working as an architectural photographer. She had also been doing quirky photoshoots for friends in her backyard for holiday cards and whatnot.
Like so many of us, the shutdown resulted in her losing her main her job. This inspired her to take the leap and begin running Electric Eye professionally.
I was a child in the 80’s and it was the coolest thing ever to grow up during that era. I remember when I was around 8 my brother, cousin and I made the most 80’s-tastic music video to Madonna’s ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ at a studio in Belmont Park. The video is on an old VHS tape which I hope to revive one day. The shoot we did with Electric Eye reminded me a lot of the quality from that music video.
Although Bridget mainly shoots from her van, she rented out a green screen studio for our shoot. We did both traditional shots and also got to pose with some of her fun props shown below. Talk about an 80’s/90’s throwback! It was so nostalgic going through her bin!
She also has an album of backgrounds to choose from:
Even though we didn’t do our photoshoot in her van we still got to see inside of it. Hands down one of the coolest vehicles I’ve ever seen!
